First of all, what are fat caps?
You may have noticed several Hollywood stars like Leonardo Dicaprio, Brad Pitt or the protagonist of the Peaky Blinders wearing those rounded caps with a stiff brim at the front. Yeah, those are what we call flat caps. Also known as a paddy cap in Ireland, a bunnet in Scotland, a Dai cap in Wales, and an English cap in the United States, these caps are available in various materials like wool, leather, corduroy, denim, linen tweed, and cotton.
The history of a flat cap can be traced back to the 14th century in Northern England when it was referred to as a bonnet. An act of the British Parliament made it compulsory for all males over 6 years of age to wear woolen caps on Sundays and holidays. This act was however repealed in 1597, but these caps had already made a mark by then.
Initially worn by the working class, they soon became popular among the upper class as well. Worn for hunting and sporting events, they were highly appreciated by the elite class.
